Autumn Leaves II

Autumn leaves

A mess behind her

Twirling through life quite madly

A grinning tornado in pigtails

Autumn leaves
no pile alone kicking poor
autumn leaves

Dancing like leaves with the autumn wind

Leaving a harvest of joy

I'm always sad when

Autumn leaves

(Dedicated to my niece Autumn Grace)

Autumn Leaves I

I walk for a living giving out parking tickets

Dancing is not that appealing after work

So I let the the world dance for me

I love to watch and keep time with my mind

Autumn leaves swirl through through the air

Floating gently like snowflakes soon to come

Tap dancing fairy rhythms like a knock on the door

When they strike my canvas coat

Gathering stirring whispering singing

A protest movement against the winter wind

Til armor clad gusts push them into full scale riot

I try to exert my control over autumn leaves

I snap at heels and shepherd them in corral piles

The grip of my hand and pull of stubborn leaves

Reawakens languid summer muscle memory

Of wide shovels and heavy snow

I trudge along tunnel streets of trees holding hands

They bow they moan they mumble they stiffly sway

Stately old men knotted yet strong hosting Cotillion

On the stage of my deck and yard

A cold but handsome Baryshnikov breeze

Stirs up ballerina leaves to follow his lead

The rain clouds roll in like ocean swells

A chill wind on my neck like a spectre's kiss

I'm the intrepid adventurous archaeologist spelunking

Scarab shell leaves crunch grimly  underfoot

The musty decay sets off sneezes and sniffles

Is the undiscovered pharaoh tomb around the corner

Walking past the skeletal cemetery trees I see

Gold flake autumn leaves covering crumbling tombs

The dusty markers stand a chorus line of headboards

Above a crimson pumpkin lemon drop leaf quilt

Tucking in and keeping warm loved ones

Thier dance is done save for the occasional  rustle

Of weary bones shifting into a better position

Autumn leaves swirl through through the air

The Magic of October Skies

The title is a mishmash of Van Morrison lyrics from the song Moondance. It also touches on the prompt about magic. Knowing OctPoWriMo was coming up I tried to get a couple poems ready ahead of time. On the first day of fall, it was a perfect Autumn day. A few mad scribblings at breaks pumped this out.

Waiting for the bus is so cold.
I shuffle my feet and feel old.

The leaves I stir go wild.
Soon I'm kicking piles like a child.

The wind gleefully joins the game,
Making mini-tornadoes in my name.

It barrels into a golden tree top.
Leaves explode in a slo-mo firework pop.

A cold wind knife twists and shoves.
For the first time I need gloves.

The air has smells I can almost taste.
What's next--pumpkin spice toothpaste?

The opaque sky spins its silver web.
The sun is a cocoon in its cottony bed.

Misty rain settles on what is still green.
Sparkles spring into a diamond sheen.

The breeze peels back the sky's comfy quilt.
Sun rays pour through and yawning light is spilt.

The noon sun is hot enough to burn my hair.
I wish I was on a beach somewhere.

My comfy coat is a sauna now.
I remove my gloves to wipe my brow.

I strip own to just my uniform shirt.
My shoes cook my feet that start to hurt.

The lemon setting sun makes the sky buttery.
Its a light bulb seen through chamomile tea.

I arrive home to the dying light.
Stuffy windows open to the cool night.

I trudge to my cold bed wondering on the way,
'How can all four seasons dance through just one day?'

Last minute poem.

A week or so ago I was going to write a beautiful poem about Autumn sights.

About warm rum butter afternoons and chilled apple cider nights.

I was going to write a cheeky poem about the season of Fall.

Garish lifesaver colors of red, yellow, and orange but deeply rich like the belle of the ball

I was going to write a hearty poem about the harvest time.

The cornucopia of a farmer's market square with a busker singing folk songs for a dime.

I was going to write about the end of summer and the start of school.

Reluctant adventurers are wrangled indoors and hope they remember how to be cool.

I was going to write a heart-warming poem about Thanksgiving.

We are grateful for the warmth and plenty of the table, and amazed we're all still living.

I was going to write this poem but my inspiration cooled.

Like dry crusty leaves snowing down from the trees my ideas in the gutter have pooled.

My notebook is as bare as the skeleton trees.

Like a chorus of bamboo wind chimes my thoughts also rattle their knees.

The words were as elusive as the last turkey at 4:30 pm Thanksgiving day.

This meal for the mind is all I could scrounge up. It's all I've got to say.
